Refinement, warmth and authenticity characterise Chateau de La Barre, which has been in the same family for six centuries. This elegant chateau lies hidden in the midst of a 100 acre private park, between Chartres and Tours, near Le Mans and Amboise, at the entrance to the Loire Valley. A UNESCO heritage site that is less than a two hour drive from Paris. Chateau de La Barre is not only a luxurious place to stay, it is also about experiencing history. With its own 16th century dry moat fortifications, chapel, flower gardens, fountains and pond, the Comte and Comtesse, Guy and Marnie de Vanssay will make you feel truly welcome as you join them for drinks in the 18th century Grande Salon with boiseries and ornate chandeliers. Candlelit dinner is served in the Grande Salle a Manger with its massive burnished dresser and exquisite china collection three times a week. Enjoy a brandy and coffee in the Salon Rose under ancestral portraits or in the Piece a Feu in front of the huge 14th century fireplace where a game of billiards will be watched by the family's fox terrier, the Weimaraner and Kakou the parrot. There are five unashamedly luxurious en suite guest rooms decorated with sumptuous fabrics and fine antiques, without compromising on contemporary comforts. During the day, enjoy relaxed, aristocratic living, or visit the picturesque villages with their Renaissance manor houses and XIIth century romanesque churches, romantic gardens, many wineries or, further afield, the famed Loire valley castles. Chateau de La Barre has been selected one of the 100 best hotels in the World. (Times Travel Magazine, November 2008)

Notes A stay at Chateau de La Barre is all about experiencing history, about stories to be discovered: The medieval old city of Le Mans, at the time of Richard the Lionhearted, the ancient wine cellars and abbeys (we arrange vintage tastings in one near Vouvray dating back to the Xth century!); the Renaissance kings and queens and their castles, Leonardo da Vinci and his inventions,(they arrange special Renaissance lunches with a 'gourmet historic consultant chef ' in Leonardo da Vinci's home); the troglodyte village of Trôo and the romanesque XIIth century churches nearby; the forrest of Bercé, with its centennial oak trees, where rumour has it that Charles VI went crazy during the Hundred Years war, in the 15th century; Chateau de La Barre is also about creating epicurean memories from which guests draw their own stories: being behind the wheel of a 1940s vintage Citroen through picturesque untouched French countryside, or driving a 430 or 599 Ferrari around the legendary Le Mans track, or golfing and riding in the vicinity, or simply just discovering aristocratic “douceur de vivre”, lingering in and around the Château and/or tasting the Loire valley wines, learning to cook your own foie gras and much more. For your small luxury groups (12 to 20 guests) interested in classic sojourns, we are able to open up private châteaux for exclusive luncheons with the owners, as we did this year for the Bentley Drivers Club.

Our Feedback
Rating: Very Good “Liked: Very pleasant, dinner was good but lacked a little imagination. Didn't Like: Bathroom could have been better at the price, while appreciating that it is no easy to create en suite bathrooms in old houses.”
