Maison Gonzagues is in a village location in Cotignac, spectacularly nestled under old cliffs with fascinating walkways which lead to the last remains of a feudal castle built in 730. The village is facing the sun and has a shady central street surrounded by plaintain trees, with restaurants and cafes. There are four floors in the house (and no elevator); rooms have wonderfuly French names - Jouy, Louis XIV and Marsaillaise. The hostess is a collector of old costumes and these are displayed on mannequins throughout the house. There are wonderful antiques and furniture and the inn has a true old-world feel to it. The rooms (all en suite) are comfortable and interesting. Particular care has been spent on the building which has been renovated in keeping with the spirit of the 18th century. The property is one of the last remaining manor houses in Cotignac, in the unspoilt Upper Var area. Please note that this little hotel does not have air conditioning. Dinners are table d'hote and should be ordered in advance. There are many delightful restauants within easy walking distance in the village. Parking is in the village on the street. No swimming pool but one can swim at Sillans La Cascade 5 km. away, or the Gorges de Verdon 40 km. or Lac. Ste. Croix 35 km. The charming host speaks excellent English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Rating: Excellent
Phillipe at Maison Gonzaques was a wonderful host and made our stay memorable and enjoyable. We highly reccomend his hotel to anyone who wishes to stay in a private, quiet and authentic location, far superior to what we saw in the rest of the village.

The owners were very welcoming and tried very hard to interact with us. They were clearly proud of what they could offer. The food was of a high quality. The house was exactly what was described in the web site.
Didn't Like:
Being the only guests - it was late in the season. An outside area to sit would have been nice - but then when we saw Cotignac, where the house was built etc that really was not a realisitic expectation . Parking was not great - but again that is Cotignac.
