This listed 16th century chateau is located on extensive grounds on the banks of the River Aude. The ancient fortress-turned-hotel subtly blends medieval tradition with modern confort - and it has an excellent restaurant too (it is important that you reserve a table in advance). The house was built by Jean de Joyeuse, first Governor of Narbonne and Lieutenant General in Languedoc, between 1540 and 1550, and his son, Guillaume III assumed the job of completing this magnificant chateau after he died. With a beautiful courtyard where one can dine in the summer months, the castle is a very special place to stay. With a swimming pool and tennis court, the hotel is a perfect base to combine relaxation with good food. Close to Cathares and 30 km to Carcassonne, there many cathedrals and historic monuments to visit. The Chateau does not have an elevator, so if you have a problem with stairs this may not be the best choice for you. Note that reception closes around 11 p.m. so please contact the hotel if you plan to arrive after this time.

Everything - excellent dinner, very comfortable room and very friendly service

Staying in a medieval castle is one of those things you've just got to do once. Worth paying for a turret room - straight out of the history books. The parkland by the river was lovely, and the food was excellent.
Didn't Like:
The hotel made a mix-up over the booking.

We liked it very much, except it was disappointing to find out the restaurant was closed on Tuesdays... the hotel, however, is not at all organized for senior citizens (golden age)... I understand it is difficult to add an elevator (lift) in the chateau.. but it should be mentionned in your site that the hotel is not "senior" citizens "friendly"... the stairway was extremely difficult for my father... elder or handicapted people do travel nowadays.. and their lack of agility should be better considered.
Rating: Poor
The hotel could not accommodate me in the restaurant that evening due to my mid evening arrival and a failure to book my table in advance. Other choices in the small town were very limited. Although the experience of sleeping in a castle was unique the quality and furnishings of the suite was less than satisfactory.
