Please note rates may vary over the weekends. This stately home, built in the nineteenth century in the Girondine style, surrounded by a pretty flower garden, is now a simple and pleasant inn. It is in the town centre of Coutras (St. Emilion) close to the railway station. Coutras is at the confluence of the Isle and the Dronne, 15 minutes from Libourne and 20 minutes from Saint-Emilion. The area is renowned for its great vineyards and as the scene of a famous battle in 1587 between the Duc de Joyeuse, commanding the troops of Henry lll, and the future king of France, Henry lV, then still the Duc de Navarre. The inn is ideally placed to explore the great cities of the southwest, Angoulême, Périgueuex, Royan, Bordeaux. There are sixteen comfortable, sound-proofed and air conditioned rooms, all uniquely decorated and with full bathrooms. The rooms also have satellite television, direct dial phones and internet access. There is a pleasant lounge bar in the hotel and there are several restaurants in the vicinity (only breakfast is served at the Henry IV). Aquitaine is a wonderful centre of wine and food and this pleasant little town would be an ideal base from which to explore.
Notes Visit St. Emilion, Chateau de Vayres, Moulins de Calon. You can take a boat tour of La Fleur d l'isle. Cruise on the water with passage through the locks. Take the steam train at Guitres and stop at the Creperie le Moulin de Charlot from 1st May to 31st October.
