This charming small hotel is nestled on the banks of the Seine in a quiet place in the shadow of the Jumieges Abbey. With the quality of light favoured by artists, the building of brick, dressed stone and half timbers is set in lush green countryside. The rooms are bright and spacious, all with full bathrooms and each has a special theme. The guestrooms have either one big bed or two twin beds, and several have an extra single bed. They are well equipped with magnifying mirror, hairdryer, bathrobes and courtesy products in the bathrooms and the room is complete with desk, flat screen TV with satellite reception, free WiFi Internet connection, minibar, safe box and telephone. There are different classes of room from classic to superior junior suites. In the morning, enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the lounge overlooking the swimming pool. In the evening, sink into one of the bar’s seriously comfortable armchairs and relax over a drink. The hotel does not have a restaurant, but just a short stroll away, the Auberge des Ruines offers a selection of gourmet dishes prepared by its highly-talented chef Loïc HENRY - the excellence of the food being matched only by the splendid panelled interior, complete with open fireplace. A few hundred yards away, next to the Jumièges car ferry, the Auberge du Bac serves the very best of traditional Normandy fare. Its comfortable dining room offers the perfect vantage point from which to observe the ships and barges plying their route along the Seine. The friendly staff at the Clos des Fontaines can advise you on the best places to dine in the area and also book your table.
Notes To see:
Jumieges Abbey is one of the most beautiful ruins in France, according to Victor Hugo. It was once one of the largest Benedictine monasteries in the West, with a reputation to match.
Founded on royal land in 654 by Saint Philibert, the abbey had a tumultuous history, with alternating periods of destruction and reconstruction. After the French Revolution, much of the monastery was demolished and its stone sold off, until it eventually passed into the hands of more conservation-minded owners who put a halt to the desecration. It was purchased by the French Government in 1946. This historic monument is notable for its striking proportions and remarkable architectural features. Its twin towers, some forty-six metres high, still overshadow the meanders of the nearby Seine. Today, Jumièges Abbey is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Normandy.
Rouen is linked with many historic figures, including Richard the Lion Heart and Joan of Arc, as well as the playwright Pierre Corneille and novelist Gustave Flaubert.
With its pedestrian-only historic centre, the “city of a thousand steeples” so beloved of Victor Hugo is an ideal place for a leisurely stroll. The capital of Normandy boasts an exceptional historical, cultural and architectural heritage, and exciting discoveries await you around every corner. Half-timbered houses vie for attention with Gothic masterpieces like the Cathedral of Notre Dame and the law courts, two Renaissance marvels - the Great Clock and the Hôtel de Bourgtheroulde - and some truly superb townhouses. As the quays along the Seine are just as vibrant and bustling as ever, you will certainly not have time feel bored in Rouen
